As technology continues to grow opportunities abound and we
become more and more dependant on the machines around us.
Those of us that make of living from these boxes that sit on our
desks have to avoid taking them for granted or we may be in for a
surprise!
Listen Up:
(ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZUUUUUuuuuuuuuu........)
That was the last sound your hard drive will ever make.

Now What?
===========
Would you business proceed as normal?
Or would you be pulling your hair out?
I am constantly amazed by how many business owners have their
entire business life in their computer yet have no backup
system.
The fact is your hard drive will crash one day, it may take years
but it will happen.
Add in hard drive devouring viruses, theft and natural
disasters and all of a sudden your business is extremely
vulnerable!
While you can put a price on your computer (I paid $XXXX.XX for
it) the value of the information on the hard disk is usually
worth many times that and something insurance just doesn't cover.

What To Backup?
================
The good news is you don't really need to backup your entire
hard drive! (Although you can if you want.)
You can re-install the operating system and other software from
their CDs (although it takes time and will never be a perfect
replacement).
The most important thing however is to have a copy of the vital
files pertaining to your business (i.e. a local copy of your web
site, customer information, e-mail archives, etc...).

How To Backup?
================
You have a variety of options depending on your budget. Many
computer systems today come with a CD burner. This is the
simplest (but not easiest) answer.
With the low cost of CDs and their relatively high storage you
can back up large sections of important data.
A removable cartridge device like a Superdisk, Jaz, or Zip drive
offers more storage space at a higher price.
Tape drives hold even more data and come in a variety of formats.
You need to make the best decision based on the amount of
information you need to backup. Take the time to look into it,
hardware changes so rapidly get the advice of someone who knows
the differences and can properly advise you.
Once the choice is made the hardest thing about backing up your
files is remembering to do it!
It is easy enough to remember the first while but you are
busy and the time you forget will be when you really need it!
Fortunately for a small price you can get software that will
automatically run your backups for you!
